Stow Wengenroth Print this page
(1906 - 1978)

Of the generation of American printmakers of the late twenties and early thirties few have survived the vicissitudes of change. Of the few survivors Stow Wengenroth is one of the best known.
For over forty-five years this distinguished lithographer never failed to produce his yearly quota of memorable prints, examples of which can be found in almost every public collection, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Art, MaMA, Brooklyn Museum, Pennsylvania Academy, Library of Congress and the Whitney just to name a few. His works also found favour in the West and examples are also in the collections of the Denver Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum and the Los Angeles Museum of Art. His works are also in the Biblioteque National in Paris and the National Library of Peru.
Galerie Pelar is fortunate to have acquired a collection of his early drawings of Paris made in the summer of I 927, watercolors and oils of Maine and drawings of the harbor of Greenport, New York which was his home for most of his adult life. Wengenroth often summered in Maine in the area of Port Clyde. He moved there permanently in 1974 but the watercolors and oils in the exhibition are from his earlier sojourns in the fifties. All of these works remained in the artist’s collection until his death in 1977 and were acquired directly from his heirs. ft is always interesting to see the works that an artist keeps back for his own collection as theyare usually of the best of his works as one sees in Picasso’s Picassos in the Hotel Sale in Paris. These Wengenroths are certainly some of his best. He was an award winning watercolorist and we can still see why in these very fresh pictures. Little is known of his accomplishment in oils and therefore we must consider those in the exhibition to be rare indeed and we can realize why he never parted with them. Wengenroth died in I 978 and by his wishes he was buried in Sterling Cemetery in Greenport.
